1. Plymouth Hoe – Plymouth Hoe is the legendary site of Sir Francis Drake’s famous game of bowls, which he kept playing despite being informed of the advancement of the Spanish Armada.  Plymouth Hoe is located near the waterfront area which witnessed the departure of the Pilgrim Fathers for America, Darwin for the Galapagos Islands and Cook’s journey to Australia.

2. Plymouth Gin Distillery Located in the Barbican area, the distillery has been in operation since 1793. It is also known as the Black Friars Distillery and free gin samples are provided to all tour groups. This is because it is located in what once was a City boat toursmonastery. Local folklore has it that the Pilgrim Fathers may have stayed at the monastery while the Mayflower was docked nearby.

3. Dartmoor Zoological Park – The Dartmoor Zoological Park otherwise known as the Sparkwell Wildlife Park in Plymouth is a great location for a day trip with the whole family. The park houses over 200 different animals including big cats, bears and insects.

4. The Royal Citadel – As England’s most significant point of defence for well over a hundred years, the Citadel was built in 1665. The walls are 70 feet high. It was equipped with 113 guns in the 18th century and is still in use by the military today.

5. National Marine Aquarium – Home to some of the rarest forms of aquatic life on display, the National Marine Aquarium has on display seahorses, sharks and innumerable varieties of sea life. It is a must see, especially if children are making the trip as well.
