Plymouth Gin
Historically, gin has been the amongst the favoured tipples for sailors, so the fact that Plymouth has historical links with the Navy makes it no surprise that there is a popular and successful brand of gin produced in the city. Plymouth Rum evolved, together with other rum brands, as Navy officers wanted a spirit which differentiated them from their crew, who were given rum as part of their rations in order to improve morale. The gin was taken by sailors to all corners of the world, something which led to it becoming popular in
other parts of the world as well as the UK, making it one of Plymouth’s most famous exports.
Plymouth Gin is a top quality spirit which is produced in the Blackfriars Distillery in Plymouth. The gin has been produced since 1793, making it amongst the oldest and well refined spirits in the country. Having changed ownership various times over the years, Plymouth Gin is now produced by Pernod Ricard, who continue to produce it in the traditional fashion which endeared it so much in the affections of people in Plymouth and around the world. One of the things that makes Plymouth Gin so unique and authentic is that it can legally only be brewed in Plymouth, so the reasonably strong 41% spirit is always brewed in exactly the same way. For those who prefer stronger spirits, strong versions of the spirits can be found at special distributors and duty free outlets, such as the ‘navy strength’ version at 57%.
The familiar label of Plymouth Gin can be recognised by the trademark blue label and the picture of the ship on the label.
The factory is located on the popular Plymouth Barbican, an area which is also a place location to learn English in England with a company such as ESL Languages ESL also by the way, offer language courses abroad for many different languages.
