History of Plymouth Argyle Football Club (PAFC)
Plymouth Argyle Football Club (PAFC) represent the city of Plymouth in the English Football League and play their games at Home Park in Central Park, Plymouth. Formed in 1886, Plymouth Argyle have always struggleds to hit the top tier of English football but continue to seek to one day play in the Premier League: Patience is a virtue for Argyle fans.
As one of only 3 professional teams in Devon (others are Torquay United and Exeter Ciity) and with no team in the adjoining county of Cornwall, Plymouth Argyle have the biggest catchment area anywhere in the UK. With crowds of 30,000 every ganme in the
1970s during the days of Paul Mariner, Argyle have huge potential as a club.
W. Pethybridge and F. Howard Grose (two close friends who also went on to play for the team) are accredited with first starting the club in 1888, having started the club when they realised that the city did not have a football team to cheer and play for. The club initially did not have a home ground but went on to occupy a space in Mount Gould. However, in 1901, the Plymouth Argyle Football Club got the opportunity to move to Home Park, the grounds they have occupied ever since. This came right after Home Park had a misunderstanding with the Devonshire Rugby Football Club and Plymouth Argyle stepped in to fill up the void.
Plymouth Argyle Football Club uses white and green as their team colours. Noted players of the club include Nick Chadwick, Mickey Evans, Paul Mariner and David Friio.
