Mount Edgcumbe - Day Trips from Plymouth
Set amid more than 800 acres of beautiful grounds, Mount Edgcumbe House and Country Park in Cornwall is a historic Tudor house in England, which was formerly the residence of the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe. The Earls of Mount Edgcumbe have lived here for four centuries, and the house, professionally restored and well maintained, offers a fascinating glimpse into history.
The house and parkland are open to visitors throughout the year. Entry to the house and Country Park costs normally aroun £12 for a family, £4 for members of a group that has reserved a tour in advance, £5 for an adult and £3 for a child (you can check their site for the latest prices).
The gardens are particularly pleasant, with the Earl’s Garden is full of rare trees, and features a terrace with a view of Plymouth Sound. There are also formal gardens in
various European styles, an American plantation and areas with New Zealand flora.
Mount Edgcumbe House and Country Park has plenty to offer the visitor indoors as well. There is a collection of Sir Joshua Reynolds’ portraits, and some fine 16th century tapestries. The period furniture that fills the house is interesting, as are the rooms themselves. The famous 17th century writer Samuel Pepys once called this house ‘the most beautiful place as ever was seen’, and most visitors would agree that it is a remarkably attractive one.
